Planning inquiries, hearings and public examinations

We advise extensively on planning appeals in respect of all types of development and are fully able to manage appeals to be heard by way of written representations, hearings or large public inquiries.

Alongside advising on appeal strategy we assist your consultants in drafting statements of case, preparing their evidence and negotiating statements of common ground, as well as providing input on the selection of counsel and expert witnesses. We also negotiate with officers and in-house lawyers on the legal agreement to secure the necessary obligations. We promote and resist requests to the Secretary of State for their recovery of appeal decisions.

For local plan examinations, we advise on strategy and prepare hearing statements as well as make representations on the plan’s satisfaction of legal requirements and soundness. Though we most often work with counsel, we do appear at local plan examinations, hearings and inquiries and Planning Committee meetings as advocates. [Mary Cook is particularly experienced at appearing at local plan examinations.]
